Setting up the Street

After the barricades have been moved into position to prevent vehicles from entering the street, 31OS volunteers and employees from the Hort will begin to set up the amenities and equipment to activate the space for the public. A Hort employee should already be setting up the DOT Street Furniture Volunteers are instructed to check in with the Hort employees on-site in case any assistance is needed.

One of the first things we set up is our own home base so that we have a clear and visible presence on the street if anyone needs to ask a question or get directions from the organizers.

Street Safety

In addition to the standard barricades and planters already on the street, 31OS has invested in additional equipment to enhance the safety of all people on the street and provide a more pleasant environment. Traffic cones and "Slow Down" signs should be placed at the entrances, exits, and anywhere else that bikes, scooters, and other micro-mobility vehicles get close to pedestrians on the Open Street.

Games and Activities

Weather permitting, games and kid-friendly activities can be set up on the street for people to enjoy. A pair of cornhole boards along with their bucket of bags should be set up on each street and materials for kids to use, such as sidewalk chalk or other art supplies, should be placed in a conspicuous area for all to be able to see.

Community Resources

Separate from planned programs, the 31OS volunteers set up and operate resources for our community to take advantage of whenever possible. These are typically placed at or near the location of the 31OS volunteer table so that if any people have questions, volunteers are there to answer and engage with them.

The Rolling Library Bookshelf

Our partner organization, the Rolling Library, provides a bookshelf and organizer bin of books that are free for anyone who wants them. We are also able to accept a limited number of donated books that are in good condition if there is space available. The bookshelf is stored empty in the basement along with a black and yellow plastic bin that holds all available books.
